Black Teen To Be Tried As Adult In White Officer's Crash Death * Funeral Held For Lawrence Officer
INDIANAPOLIS -- A teenager charged with reckless homicide in a crash that killed a Lawrence police officer will be tried in adult court, a judge ruled.  Dennis Sloan, 15, was driving a stolen van and leading police on a chase on March 5 when the van broadsided a patrol car driven by Lawrence police Officer Craig Herbert. Herbert, 34, died as a result of the crash. He was the Lawrence Police Department's first officer to die in the line of duty.  Sloan also is charged with resisiting law enforcement, failure to stop at an accident causing death, and auto theft.  A passenger in the van, also a teenage boy, was charged with auto theft. - (crime) - (black-on-white)
