Confederate Sailor Buried in Ala.
CSS AlabamaMOBILE, Ala. -- The remains of a Confederate sailor, recovered several years ago from a shipwreck at the bottom of the English Channel, were buried Saturday in a handmade wooden coffin pulled by a horse-drawn caisson. The unidentified sailor's skeletal remains were found on the underside of a cannon raised from the wreck of the CSS Alabama in about 200 feet of water. The Confederate warship was sunk in the channel off the coast of France on June 19, 1864, by the Union warship USS Kearsarge. More than 400 artifacts have been recovered from the site by American and French divers. The CSS Alabama had a crew of about 120 members, and most were rescued by boaters in the area, but about a dozen drowned or were never heard from again, said Robert Edington, a Mobile attorney and president of the CSS Alabama Association. Saturday's funeral procession began downtown at the site of the statue of Adm. Raphael Semmes, who was the commanding officer of the CSS Alabama, and ended at Magnolia Cemetery where the sailor was buried. The sailor's coffin was accompanied by members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The group, which was holding its annual convention in Mobile, arranged the funeral with the support of heritage groups and individuals. - (Confederacy)

January is often referred to as "Generals Month" as no less than four famous Confederate Generals claimed January as their birth month: James Longstreet (Jan. 8, 1821), Robert E. Lee (Jan. 19, 1807), Thomas Jonathan Jackson (Jan. 21, 1824), and George Pickett (Jan. 28, 1825). Two of these men, Lee and Jackson, are particularly noteworthy. This is especially true, as this year will mark General Lee's two hundredth birthday.

Lee nearly 150 years after the Civil War planned lectures, a banquet and artillery salutes to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth. Events were scheduled throughout the weekend at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, at Lee's birthplace at Stratford Hall Plantation, and in Richmond, the former Confederate capital.

Historic U.S. Flag Returns to Tennessee
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- When the first U.S. flag known as Old Glory was last flown prominently here, the nation was embroiled in the Civil War. Now, more than 140 years after the flag became a legend when it was flown atop the state Capitol to celebrate the capture of the city from Confederate forces in 1862, the flag has returned to Tennessee.

and thus still exists as an occupied government under the control of the Federal Union (UNITED STATES, INC.)

Teen Fights S.C. School's Confederate Ban
LATTA, S.C. -- A 15-year-old girl led a small protest march Monday over her high school's ban on Confederate flag clothing, which she is also challenging in court. Candice Hardwick walked with about a dozen people, about half of them family members and some wearing Confederate T-shirts, a few blocks to Latta High School. Hardwick wore a Confederate belt buckle and button and had the Confederate flag on her cell phone cover. She removed those items before entering the school, where she is a sophomore.

Girl Sues School Over Confederate Clothes
Candice Michele HardwickS.C. -- The family of a high school sophomore has filed a suit seeking to force school officials to allow the girl to wear clothing with Confederate flag images. The federal lawsuit was filed Thursday by the North Carolina-based Southern Legal Resource Center, a Confederate heritage legal advocacy group. Candice Hardwick, 15, said she wants to wear the Confederate emblem to pay tribute to an ancestor who fought for the South in the Civil War. Latta High School officials say the symbol, which many people consider racially charged, is disruptive in school, and that district policies allow principals to ban such clothing.

Student Settles Over Confederate Dress
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- A former high school student barred from her prom because she wore a dress styled as a Confederate battle flag has reached a settlement with the school district, her attorney said. Jacqueline Duty filed a lawsuit after Greenup County school officials called the dress too controversial and kept her out of Russell High School's May 1, 2004 prom.

    SOUTH CANAAN TWP. – A suspended Western Wayne High School student was arrested Thursday because police believe he recently replaced his school’s American flag with a Confederate flag, court papers said. The day before the flag swap, 18-year-old James A. Bronson Jr., a senior at the school, was suspended for making racial remarks to several black students in the cafeteria. He also shouted “white power” several times as he left the cafeteria. (reader link)

Alabama Textile Mill, 161 Years Old, to Shut Down in September
The mill, located on the banks of the Tallapoosa River about 30 miles east of Montgomery, originally cleaned, spun, wove, bleached and dyed cotton, manufacturing Confederate uniforms and tent material during the Civil War. It was also used as an armory for Confederate troops.

Vanderbilt U. Loses 'Confederate' Bid
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Vanderbilt University would violate a decades-old contract if it stripped the word "Confederate" from the name of a dormitory built with the help of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, a court ruling released Wednesday said.
The heritage group donated a third of the building's cost. In return, the name Confederate Memorial Hall was chiseled into stone over the main entrance. The state appeals court said Vanderbilt must leave the name intact or pay the group the current value of the $50,000 given when the building was constructed in 1935. It was not immediately clear what that amount would be in today's dollars.

People gathered around the Confederate Monument on the Capitol lawn and sang "Dixie" to celebrate the state holiday for Confederate Memorial Day. Jeannette Taylor of Springville, a chapter president with the United Daughters of Confederacy, said she came to remember "the most noble army to ever take the field of battle." The Great Seal of the Confederacy
The Great Seal of the Confederacy, or "Deo Vindice" seal
was smuggled through the Union blockade, along with its pressing equipment, during the war. It proudly displays the Confederate motto of Deo Vindice, which is Latin for "God will Vindicate."
In keeping with the Southerners belief that their struggle was continuing the beliefs of America's founding fathers, the seal displays a mounted General George Washington in the center of the seal.
