• Police: Black Muslim bakery tied to black reporter's slaying
  OAKLAND -- Police conducted a series of raids early today, including one at a Black Muslim-run bakery that was the subject of coverage by a journalist slain in a brazen shooting a day earlier. Oakland Deputy Police Chief Howard Jordan said 19 people were detained in the pre-dawn raids at Your Black Muslim Bakery and three other locations, which he called part of a yearlong investigation into several violent crimes, including "murder, robbery and kidnapping." He did not identify the other locations. He would not say whether the raids were related to the shooting of journalist Chauncey Bailey, who was killed near the Alameda County courthouse in downtown Oakland Thursday. - (Newsroom)

  Saechin fired one shot, hitting one of the alleged burglars in the chest. The three fled the scene, police said. Police said they are looking for two other people who were involved in the attempted theft. The men were described as Asian and between 18 and 20 years old.
  

Castro Valley: Dead Mexican Migrant Girl Laid To Rest In Mexico
YAHUALICA. Mexico -- Four years after she left the dusty streets of Yahualica, Mexico for a better life in America, the body of teenager Yesenia Nungaray was laid to rest Thursday ending the tragic journey of Castro Valley's "Jane Doe". Deputies from the Alameda County Sheriff's Department escorted the body back to Mexico and on Wednesday gave the girl's family an angel carved out of stone to adorn her gravesite. The 16-year-old's body was found inside a green canvas bag behind a Carrows restaurant in Castro Valley on May 1, 2003. She had a rag stuffed down her throat and had died of asphyxiation about 10 days earlier.

Gunman Cesar Mendez in Ukiah likely on drugs
UKIAH - Cesar Mendez may have been under the influence of drugs Monday night when he began shooting at a group of police officers in Ukiah, prompting a fierce gun battle in which he was killed.

Joseph Cordova convicted of raping and killing an 8-year-old girl - also molested young boy
SAN PABLO - A man convicted of raping and killing a girl 27 years ago in San Pablo politely testified that if a jury recommended he serve a life sentence in prison, rather than be executed, he might kill somebody.The 62-year-old Joseph Cordova expressed indifference about his fate. He denied murdering 8-year-old Cannie Melinda Bullock while committing rape and a lewd act with a child younger than 14 -- the charges the jury found him guilty of two weeks ago. Cordova was never a suspect, until 2002 when San Pablo police investigators matched sexual assault DNA evidence taken from Cannie's body with Cordova. Investigators found Cordova serving a prison sentence in Colorado for molesting a 12-year-old boy. SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO -- At a news conference Monday afternoon, South San Francisco police announced the arrest of a man suspected of attempting to rape a woman at a South San Francisco business on Thursday, but have yet to connect him to a several area rapes and attempted rapes over the past year.Investigators were not "100-percent sure" that Contreras was responsible for a February 2006 rape in Colma, two attempted rapes in South San Francisco's Orange Park in September and November, and a rape on South Linden Avenue in South San Francisco, also in November. - (Newsroom) - (Norcal)

But in August, Popal swept through the streets of San Francisco in his sport utility vehicle, smashing into 18 people after killing a pedestrian in Fremont. • Wazir Rahim fatally shot his 46-year-old wife Zerhghona during an argument
  FREMONT, Calif. -- A man who killed his wife and then shot his mother-in-law was nearly beaten to death by relatives summoned by the wounded matriarch before authorities were alerted, police said. Zerghona Rahim's 82-year-old mother, who witnessed the shooting, was shot several times as she ran away. The woman, whose name was not released, staggered to a neighbor's home and called two men, who arrived in minutes and severely beat the husband, Veteran said. They held him until police arrived.

• Israeli migrant teacher arrested in connection with lewd acts
  A teacher at a small private school in the El Cerrito hills was jailed last week on suspicion of molesting a student, police disclosed over the weekend. Achi Ben Shalom, 52, of El Cerrito, posted $100,000 bail from County Jail in Martinez on Friday after his arrest the previous evening on suspicion of committing lewd acts on a child. Tehiyah is a Jewish community day school in the 2600 block of Tassajara Avenue that teaches from a Judaic cultural perspective. School officials could not be reached during the weekend for comment. According to the school's Web site, Ben Shalom has taught there since 1985 as Hebrew teacher, choir director and band leader. Rape Suspects Gracia and Munoz Charges On Hold
Porterville police said that their investigation today lead them to conduct interviews in and outside the city of Porterville. At the end of the day, however, police say they still need more information to charge the suspects in the rape and kidnap of two women.
Robert Gracia (left) and Beinto Munoz remain in custody tonight. But, not on kidnapping, rape or conspiracy charges. Gracia is in custody for check fraud and an unspecified felony. Munoz remains behind bars for domestic violence and DUI charges.   SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- A woman accused of killing her three young sons by tossing them into the San Francisco Bay has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity and believes her children are growing up in heaven, according to psychiatric evaluations. Lashuan (aka Lashaun) Harris, 23, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder Wednesday in San Francisco Superior Court. • Demon-posessed black woman Lashaun Harris claims "God Said to Kill Sons"
  An Oakland woman who allegedly threw her three young sons to their deaths in the San Francisco Bay last October thought she heard the "voice of God" telling her to sacrifice her children, the woman's attorney said Tuesday at a preliminary hearing. Lashaun Harris is charged with three counts of murder, but attorney Teresa Caffese told the court that Harris, 23, was mentally ill on Oct. 19 when she threw the boys into the water at Pier 7. The body of Taronta Ray Greely Jr., 2, was later recovered. The bodies of 16-month-old Joshua Greely and Trayshaun Harris, 6, have never been found.

Mexifornia: Corrupt Hispanic San Jose mayor Gonzales rejects calls to step down
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Mayor Ron Gonzales rejected calls to step down after he was booked on fraud, bribery and conspiracy charges following a grand jury probe into a secretly negotiated garbage contract. Gonzales, 55, was released on a $50,000 bond after being indicted on six counts Thursday for allegedly brokering a backroom deal that cost taxpayers more than $11 million. He continued to deny any wrongdoing in the scandal that has dogged him for nearly two years. Gonzales' budget aide, Joe Guerra, and Norcal Waste Systems also were charged in the indictment. Berkeley: Rape suspect Adamu Chan arrested
Police are asking the public’s help in locating any other victims of a man they’ve arrested for the April 11 rape of a woman in North Berkeley. Adamu Chan, 30, has been charged with assaulting a Berkeley woman he lured into his residence after they had shared coffee. The  District Attorney’s office has charged him with rape, false imprisonment, oral copulation and menacing. His victim, a Berkeley woman in her 30s, has only a limited grasp of English. She identified Chan as her attacker from a photo lineup, in which the unique tattoos that adorn both of his arms and his upper chest were clearly visible. Investigators are concerned that there may be other victims, also unfamiliar with the language and or who may be afraid or unable to contact police. Contact the Berkeley Police Dept. Action News has learned, police have more than enough evidence to charge him with the murder of Officer Gary Skerski and an arrest warrant is imminent. Police released a mug shot of the suspect, 23-year-old Solomon Montgomery. It was taken from a California arrest. 'Savage' previously-deported illegal Mexican alien rapist Israel Bustamonte gets 80 years
OAKLAND -- A judge today told an Oakland man that he will probably die behind bars for a series of sexual assaults that included an attack on a teenager whose first sexual experience was being dragged into the bushes while jogging in Berkeley. Alameda County Superior Court Judge C. Don Clay sentenced Israel Bustamonte to 80 years in prison and called his crimes "brutal and savage acts," and the mother of a 17-year-old girl Bustamonte attacked condemned him. "She is virtuous," the woman, whom The Chronicle is not naming to protect the victim's identity, said of her daughter. "This was her first experience with a man. It was her first gynecological exam. It was painful and difficult and embarrassing. "It was," she added, "also the first time she had experienced any kind of violence." The woman said her daughter now has problems relating to men, including her father, and said of Bustamonte's conviction, "Mom, it's not going to undo what happened." Bustamonte, 26, showed no visible reaction as an interpreter translated the woman's comment. Bustamonte pleaded guilty to 10 felonies stemming from attacks in which four women were robbed, beaten and raped in Berkeley and Oakland. He had faced 23 felony counts of rape, sodomy, sexual assault, oral copulation and robbery.
