Shooting adds a tragedy to sad life of ex-Utahn
Jennifer Lyn Hyatte - "before"George C. HyatteJenifer Forsyth Hyatte - "after"By spring 2004, things were coming together for her in Dyersburg, Tenn. She had custody of her daughter and two sons - who had been taken from her and her ex-husband, Eli Gourdin by Utah child welfare authorities at the time of their 2000 divorce. Hyatte's latest marriage was her fourth. Her first marriage was in 1992 to Gourdin, who currently has their children - a 9-year-old daughter and sons ages 11 and 12 - for a summer visit. In May 1999, Gourdin was driving under the influence of methamphetamine, with all three children in the car, when he had an accident. The oldest boy was the most severely injured, and he underwent hours of surgery to repair his face. Gourdin pleaded guilty operating the meth lab; receiving or transferring a stolen car and possessing drugs with intent to distribute. After Gourdin was released from prison in December 2002, he sought visitation and asked to pay child support. Hyatte opposed his visitation request.

Gourdin said Hyatte briefly married a West Valley City man following their divorce. That union lasted just three months, he said, and his children have told him she left that husband for Tennessee after he was abusive to her. She married Gordon R. Taylor in Dyersburg in May 2004, but separated less than three months later. Taylor filed for divorce in September. Gourdin said when that marriage ended, Hyatte went to a safe house. Jennifer married George in prison about two days before she got a divorce from her second husband
