    Tips Lead to Rape Suspects' Arrest
Jermaine JohnsonGregory ParksPolice caught up with two rape suspects after they tossed their alleged victim's purse in the trash. The tell-tale clue was caught on a convenience store surveillance system. It was on an upscale Summerlin street where police say a 60-year-old woman was brutally raped. She was driving home at 2 a.m. on New Year's Eve and was attacked in a car in front of her home. Metro police arrested the suspects, 22-year-old Jermaine Johnson and 24-year-old Gregory Parks, thanks to a 7-11 store and tips from the public. - (Gman)

 
  • Ethiopian Migrant Torture Suspect Arrested in Ga. - Deportation hearing scheduled for next week
    Kelbessa NegewoATLANTA -- An Ethiopian immigrant suspected of torturing and murdering dissidents in a military dictatorship in Ethiopia during the 1970s was arrested Tuesday by federal agents and faces deportation. Kelbessa Negewo, 54, remains in federal custody and will face a deportation hearing before an immigration judge. In 1993, a U.S. district judge ordered Negewo to pay $1.5 million to three women who testified that he tortured them during Ethiopia's "Red Terror" campaign of 1977-78. The women said they were stripped, hung upside down from a pole and beaten. - (Crusader)

  • Court Rules Against Haitian-American Man
    The U.S. government can revoke a Haitian-American man's citizenship even though he was convicted of drug charges after becoming a citizen, an appeals court has ruled. The government argued that Lionel Jean-Baptiste, of Miami, "illegally procured" his citizenship because he committed a crime while awaiting approval of his application.

    In the latest attack 53-year-old woman was assaulted in her home. In all three cases, the assailant was described as a black male.

  • Georgia: New Black Sheriff Fires White Employees, Deploys Snipers
    Victor HillThe firings had a racial overtone. Victor Hill was among a spate of black candidates elected last year in the county once dominated by rural whites. The county seat was the setting for the fictional plantation Tara in "Gone With The Wind." The fired employees included four of the highest-ranking officers, all of them white.   • Sports: Dzaflo Larkai A former member of the LaSalle University men's basketball is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 18 on charges of raping a former member of the women's team. Dzaflo Larkai was ordered to stand trial by a judge following a recent preliminary hearing in which the woman testified that he had sex with her while she was asleep. Larkai is charged with rape, simple assault and indecent assault.



  • Sports: BYU football players accused of gang rape will have to wait six more months
    Ibrahim Rashada Ibrahim Rashada is one of four former BYU football players accused of giving alcohol to a 17-year old girl, showing her a pornographic movie, and then raping her in an off-campus apartment. Defense attorneys are just beginning to sort through all of the evidence that prosecutors plan to use at trial, and plan to file numerous motions challenging some of that evidence. For now Rashada, BJ Mathis, and Karland Bennett will all be tried together, but at least one attorney may ask for separate trials. - (more sports)

    UK: Sports: African Migrant Runner from Kenya in charged with raping co-ed - "desperate for sex"

A world champion runner has gone on trial accused of raping a Coventry University student. Billy Konchellah, aged 42, allegedly told the woman he was desperate for sex before attacking her as she slept. The former runner denies rape but has admitted an indecent assault on another student on the same evening. A jury heard Konchellah's alleged victim had woken up to find him in bed with her. She said: "I could feel somebody on me and between my legs and I felt his hands on both my arms. She ran home sobbing and later reported the attack to police. Konchellah's wife was abroad during the incidents.

    Luis Uriarte Wanted for Alleged Rape, Torture, Kidnapping Arrested in Phoenix
Luis UriarteLuis Uriarte was arrested in Phoenix, Arizona by Deputy United States Marshals.  Last week, Phoenix deputies received a lead from the Los Angeles Fugitive Task Force that Uriarte was in the Phoenix area.  Uriarte, a convicted felon, is alleged to have kidnapped and held a 30-year-old Los Angeles woman for 21 days, during which time he is suspected to have repeatedly raped and tortured her. Uriarte routinely raped, tortured, burned and threatened to kill the victim. - (Citizenship status of suspect not reported)

    Hemant Lakhani, a "British" businessman plotted to bring 200 shoulder-fired missiles into the United States, and told a federal informant posing as a terrorist how the weapons could be used to shoot down airplanes, a prosecutor alleged Tuesday. - (Svejk)
  • FBI Probes Man on Ties to Islamic Charity
    Prosecutors have asked a judge to halt citizenship proceedings for a businessman who headed an Islamic charity so the FBI can continue investigating whether he lied about his ties to organizations that include one linked to Osama bin Laden. A U.S. Attorney asked to postpone Emadeddin Z. Muntasser's naturalization hearing.

  • Indiana Roman Catholic Bishop defends handling of Florida case of homosexual abuse of 11-year-old boy
    A Roman Catholic bishop said he did not act sooner against a priest accused of sexual misconduct with a minor in Florida because police and church investigators had trouble contacting the alleged victim. Bishop Dale Melczek also said the Rev. Richard Emerson, suspended last month as pastor of Notre Dame Church in Long Beach, Ind., has denied any sexual misconduct with his accuser. A Florida man now 29 notified the Catholic Diocese of Orlando on May 25 that he had been abused by Emerson when the priest worked there from 1987 to 1991. The alleged victim said the sexual acts occurred in Florida when he was between the ages of 11 and 18.

Superior Court Judge Charles Spurlock's order bars the publication of the names of Shanley's accusers, one man is expected to testify at his trial on child rape charges later this month and has spoken publicly about his allegations.

Emily has been missing for two weeks, and they think suspect Lindsey Bruce may know where she is.The past few days have been very frustrating for the Madison Township Police Department. Paul Cruikshank, 24, was arrested by Oak Park police following an attack Friday and investigators discovered he was sought by Chicago police in two attacks on Chicago's north side. Oak Park police arrested Cruikshank early Saturday after a woman was grabbed, dragged into a Forest Park alley and attacked, - (forum)

The two victims said their faith helped them to survive, NBC 4's Nancy Burton reported. Robert Eugene Jackson and Michael Deanglo Lathon were accused of forcing their way into the couple's home of Judith and John Hansel. Police said Jackson and Lathon then restrained the residents and burglarized the home. "I was sure he was going to kill us," Judith Hansel said. "I started to say, 'Lord, save me. Jesus, save us.' (The suspect) didn't like hearing that." "He pushed me down and bound my mouth." John Hansel said the other suspect beat him. "I had a swollen head," John Hansel said. "My mouth was not covered because he wanted information from me." John Hansel said one suspect stayed with them while the other drove to the bank with their ATM card. - (Gman)
