High court to decide whether flag emblem suit will be heard
The U.S. Supreme Court on Jan. 9 will discuss whether to hear arguments in a case in which a Muslim sued Mississippi over the Confederate battle emblem in the state flag.
Lower federal courts had rejected John Ellis Briggs' argument that the Mississippi flag contains a Christian symbol — the St. Andrew's Cross — and that the symbol represents state endorsement of a particular religion.
Briggs' lawsuit seeks punitive damages of up to $77.77 million. It also seeks to have the symbol "removed from display in public places."
Since 1894, Mississippi's flag has contained the Confederate battle emblem, a blue X with 13 whites stars over a field of red. Experts differ on whether the X in the Confederate battle emblem is the St. Andrew's Cross.

Salvation for Confederates and Yankees (or Historical Evidence of Israel) - by Gary Smith
"The twelve six-pointed stars first came to light on flags of the South: the 57th Georgia, 9th Mississippi and 1st Florida. These were Braxton Bragg's Battle Flags of 1862.
The flags issued to the units of General Braxton Bragg's corps in March 1862
They showed up again: a 1995 postage stamp featuring a uniformed Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, a photograph of Gen. Lee's overcoat as sewn by the ladies of Maryland, an Arkansas belt plate and an 1860 deck of playing cards. Then came the discovery of other Confederates who wore and/or appeared in photographs and drawings with the star(s) of six points: Col. John S. Mosby, Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, Gen. Leonidas Polk, Gen. Patrick L. Cleburne, Col. John Haskell, Col. John Henry Winder and Gen. Arnold Elzey to name only a few. A friend of mine and great-great-grandson of Gen. Joseph E. Johnston assured me that "...they were not Jewish" but admitted curiosity about the star's presence..."

  • Mabel White, 84, died of cancer this morning at her residence
As a member of the J.Z. George Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Mrs. White was instrumental in the renovation of the Confederate Memorial Building that was nearly destroyed by fire. "Mabel was my right hand person. Whatever came up, Mabel helped me," said Mary Ann Shaw, who is in charge of the Confederate Memorial Building.

  • Fort Union Guarded New Mexico Frontier for 40 Years
When news of the firing on Fort Sumter in April 1861 reached Fort Union, the Southern-born officers promptly resigned their federal commissions. Included were Maj. James Longstreet and Capt. Richard Ewell, who would become lieutenant generals commanding corps in Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia.
Maj. Henry Hopkins Sibley, the Louisiana-born post commander, also resigned, and in less than a year, he would lead a Confederate invasion of New Mexico.

    The all-girl Rhea County Spartans
The Rhea County Girls' Company was created in the summer of 1862 through a combination of boredom and the desire to be a part of the war for Southern Independence. Almost all of the "sidesaddle soldiers" had fathers or brothers
in the Confederate military, and the young ladies evidently felt frustrated because their gender prevented them from enlisting. Since they could not actually join the Confederate Army, they did the next best thing: They created an Army of their own.

The Civil War in Lexington
"News reached Lexington, Kentucky of the attack on Fort Sumter by Confederate forces in South Carolina...
...an armed body of men bearing the Confederate flag passed through the streets of Lexington, heading south to swell the Confederate army, amidst cheers for Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

Brigadier General John Hunt MorganLexington's Confederate Brigadier General and guerrilla raider John Hunt Morgan
was born in Alabama, but was long a resident of Lexington, Kentucky.
Morgan had a yen for military service, and in the late 1850's he organized the Lexington Rifles, a pro-Southern militia. His command of the militia was to set the stage for his Confederate cavalry activities.
By early 1862, Morgan had earned a reputation both in the North and South for his daring raids

Separation, Secularism, or States Rights? - By James Brown Jr.
"There are two extreme positions which divide patriots concerning the subject of the Constitution. The first is a watered down version of the "separation of church and state" myth. The second is the theory that the Constitution is secular and humanist. Both views have been created through a misunderstanding of the order of authority between the Federal government and the States (States Rights)..."

  • In local news 80 years ago this week - Stonewall Jackson statue
Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" JacksonOne seldom-recalled tale concerns the origin of the statue of Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson in Capitol Square, the first statue honoring a Confederate leader erected in the city. Oddly, neither the city nor the state was responsible for the statue's commission.
The Dec. 2, 1923 Times-Dispatch included a report on the statue's background that was inspired by a recent one-day visit to Richmond by former British Prime Minister David Lloyd George. While here, Lloyd George expressed great interest in the Civil War. Lloyd George viewed several battle sites around the city in a tour led by newspaper editor and historian Douglas Southall Freeman. As Lloyd George later studied Jackson's statue in Capitol Square, he expressed his admiration for the general's character, calling him "a man of great quality."

[Letter to the Editor regarding Howard Dean]

"Dear Sir:

Don't be too hard on Howard Dean.
Here's an exact parallel to his Confederate flag pronouncement: If Beauregard Bo-Dean, Democratic frontrunner from Dixie, had said: "I want to appeal to the Boston Irish who spraypaint shamrocks on walls," I would know exactly what he meant. I would say, "He doesn't really understand us, but he means well."

I enjoy your web page. Thanks for your time."

  • Crosstarlist: Confederate Flag Remains Protest Against Exploitation
"Dean had good reason to say "guys" in "pick-up trucks"

JACKSON - The reason Howard Dean spoke of appealing to guys in "pickup trucks" and not Volvos or Lexus is because the South was so exploited by Carpetbaggers and Freedmen following the Civil War that its economy had never recovered. So, lacking in industry, Southerners have taken to small craftsmanship, truck-farming and single-owner service-work to make ends meet. And, the Confederate flag remains their protest against continued ruinous economic policies, carting off their wealth, and tyrannical social-policies, forcing descendants of slaves over them..."

  • Confederacy used charming sisters as spies
At first, no one suspected the two lovely Ohio ladies who traveled extensively about the South. But in time, Ginnie and Lottie Moon were revealed as Confederate spies. The Moon sisters were born in Virginia but moved to Oxford, Ohio, as youngsters. Lottie married Jim Clark, soon to become a judge, and her younger sister moved in with them. Both women became couriers for the South, using their charms to easily slip through Union lines with secret dispatches.

  • Howard Dean wants the white trash vote," wrote Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer in recent mockery of the Vermonter. "That's clearly what [Dean] meant when he said he wanted the votes of 'guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks.'"
After Dean was savaged by Al Sharpton, who called the Confederate flag an "American swastika," Krauthammer was rhapsodic. His humiliation serves Dean right, Krauthammer chortled. He should never have pandered to Southern "yahoos" and "rebel-yelling racist redneck(s)."
  • Crosstarlist: Dean Nixes Meeting with Confederate-Flag Backers
Haden not surprised by snub; Carter defends diversity-protest Risher overturns school-election

BOSTON - No sooner had Howard Dean announced that he liked "guys with Confederate flags in their pickup trucks" than flag proponents swung into action to meet with the former Vermont Governor. However, they were quickly turned down. The Nationalist Movement, which is non-partisan and non-political, but which led the Mississippi drive for the flag, was first to contact Dean to propose a meeting. "We'd like to hear specifics on how you will endeavor to promote the flag and the people, blood and honor it represents," they said.
  • Gold found in shipwreck off Georgia
Gold coins found amid the wreckage of a side-wheel steamer that sank off the Georgia coast in 1865.
Officials believe the coins are part of a Yankee cargo of thousands of $20 gold pieces that the SS Republic was carrying from New York to New Orleans for "Reconstruction" of the South.

Oh, I'm a good old Rebel,
Now that's just what I am;
For this "fair land of Freedom"
I do not care a damn.
I'm glad I fit against it-
I only wish we'd won.
And I don't want no pardon
For anything I've done.

The Great Seal of the Confederacy
The Great Seal of the Confederacy, or "Deo Vindice" seal
was smuggled through the Union blockade, along with its pressing equipment, during the war. It proudly displays the Confederate motto of Deo Vindice, which is Latin for "God will Vindicate."
In keeping with the Southerners belief that their struggle was continuing the beliefs of America's founding fathers, the seal displays a mounted General George Washington in the center of the seal.
