Dance teacher Valdez waives hearing in child molestation case A Clovis gymnastics teacher accused of sexually molesting five girls waived his right to a preliminary hearing Tuesday, skipping a chance to hear the evidence against him and moving closer to a criminal trial. Rogelio "Roger" Valdez, 51, now awaits the scheduling of his Fresno County Superior Court trial on 12 counts of child molestation.
Clovis police arrested Valdez Sept. 28 on suspicion of molesting four teen-age girls hired to clean his business, the Roger Valdez Gymnastics and Dance studio on Tollhouse Road. After his arrest, Clovis police said eight other girls, all former students, came forward and accused Valdez of molesting them. Some of those allegations go back to 1984. As many as seven people may have been present at Ramos' murder, which he says happened when Silva, 18, Lopes, 33, and Goans, 23, raped and beat her to death.
Police believe she had been beaten, sexually assaulted and killed sometime between May 29 and June 3, the day her mother reported her missing. Authorities said police had responded to domestic dispute calls involving Silva and Ramos before Ramos' death.
Tempers flared Tuesday at the San Joaquin County Courthouse as one of three men accused in the rape and slaying of a popular Manteca High School junior blamed his co-defendant for murder. "How does it feel to be a killer?" snapped Ty Lopes to Jacob Lee Silva, the former boyfriend of Renee Michelle Ramos, whose body was found in June at a Manteca Home Depot construction site. "How does it feel to be looking at the death penalty?"

Attempted rape earns illegal alien 7 years
The suspected illegal immigrant blames drugs for his attack on the woman, 87
HAYWARD -- A man who pleaded no contest to charges he attempted to rape an 87-year-old Pleasanton woman at a bus stop in July was sentenced to seven years in state prison Friday. Dressed in a blue jail jumpsuit, Francisco Pardinas Hernandez, 28, showed no emotion as Alameda County Superior Court Judge Joseph Hurley read the sentence.
Hernandez also was fined $2,800, $1,400 of which was suspended, and ordered to pay $7,133.80 restitution. Hernandez was accused of trying to rape the woman as she walked to a bus stop on Old Bernal Avenue near Pleasanton city offices shortly after 6 a.m. on July 20. A passerby broke up the attack, but the suspect disappeared into some bushes.

A police dog helped locate Hernandez, about an hour after the incident, at a nearby apartment complex. Before being sentenced, Hernandez blamed the attack on drug use and asked the victim for forgiveness. "I want the lady to please forgive me," he said through an interpreter. "I was on drugs. I had been drinking. I didn't know what I was doing." The judge shot back: "Your statements after the fact indicate that you knew the evil you were doing or about to do," referring to a confession police recorded after Hernandez was arrested.
Hernandez is believed to have entered the country illegally and faces deportation once he is released, which could be in nearly six years, said his attorney, Leonard Ulfelder, an assistant public defender. "This was a bad situation for everyone," Ulfelder said after sentencing

"In most of the cases that I hear about, the guys kidnap them," Kosan said, "and have sex with the girl." While some of the men have intentions of marrying, she said, most girls are raped and deserted. That means the girls lose the virginity that within their culture is "a commodity that must be valued," she said, adding that even in cases of rape, for some a girl who is not a virgin brings shame on her family and community. "If (the father) believes, 'Oh, my daughter has been dishonored,' that's dishonoring the whole family," Kosan said. "There have been cases where they prefer that she get married than see their daughter stay like that, ruined, because that's how they see it."

  • Ramon Gaytan Sanchez Sentenced For Attempted Murder of common-law wife
The Santa Cruz County District Attorney's Office said a Watsonville man was sentenced today in Santa Cruz County Superior Court to two life terms for trying to murder his common-law wife early last year. Assistant District Attorney David Rabow said Ramon Gaytan Sanchez, 32, would not be eligible for parole for approximately 40 years. The roommate fled the house, and Sanchez followed outside to pursue his victim. They struggled with the gun, and another shot was fired into the air.
When Watsonville police arrived on the scene they found Sanchez a short distance away with a cut to his neck, where he had apparently attempted to cut his own throat. • Spanic Stalker shoots Gabriela Garcia, then turns gun on self
DELANO — A man and woman were in very critical condition late Tuesday after the man reportedly shot the woman at least twice and then turned the gun on himself.
Family members said the man had been stalking Delano resident Gabriela Garcia, 22, after she rebuffed his advances in recent weeks. She was shot in the chest and abdomen by the man just outside her home on Garces Highway about 5:05 p.m. Garcia was reported in very critical condition after surgery at Delano Regional Medical Center late Tuesday.
According to Delano police, the man shot Garcia before shooting himself in the head. Garcia's cousin Carolina Ayon said she and Garcia were heading back to their house after checking the mail when the man grabbed Garcia and pulled her to the side of the house.
She said the man had been stalking Garcia for the past several days. Ayon said she ran into her home and called the police. "Then I heard gunshots," Ayon said in a shaky voice.
Delano police Chief Jack Griggs said Garcia and her assailant were arguing in the parking stall next to the home before the suspect fired. Ayon said Garcia didn't know the man well. "He wanted to be her boyfriend, but she didn't want to," Ayon said.
Garcia lived with her cousin and stayed inside the house often because the man they suspected to be stalking her would drive up and down the street, according to family members. Police officials couldn't immediately confirm that the man had been stalking Garcia.
Neighbors who described their neighborhood as being safe were caught off-guard by the incident. "I heard three shots," neighbor Sal Ornelas said. Garcia and her assailant were taken to Delano Regional Medical Center by paramedics with unknown injuries. After initial treatment, the man was taken to Kern Medical Center for further treatment. He was in very critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head late Tuesday. Detectives are investigating the shooting.
