Walik L. WhitesideA man who was found guilty by a jury last month in the 2012 attempted rape of a jogger found out what it was like to beg for his life — this time before a judge — as she sentenced him to serve 60 years for his crimes against the jogger. She also sentenced him to six months in an unrelated battery case. Walik L. Whiteside, 19, received his sentence Thursday in Allen Superior Court before Allen Superior Court Judge Fran Gull — 20 years for the attempted rape and 20 years apiece for two counts of criminal deviate conduct, with all counts to be served consecutively, or one after another, because they involved violent acts against a woman who was jogging in broad daylight in September 2012 along the Rivergreenway near Fairfield Avenue and Lower Huntington Road. During sentencing, Gull called Whiteside a "predatory and narcissistic human being," and ordered him to serve his sentence under maximum security. Defense attorney Randall Hammond, who represented Whiteside for the separate battery charge against an inmate in the Allen County Jail, took the lead during the sentencing hearing for both cases. Whiteside had represented himself during the attempted rape trial after going through four public defenders, all of whom he said were failing to represent him during his 1 1/2-year-long criminal case that endured numerous continuances and disruptions to the judicial process.
Whiteside also is serving a 25-year term for an Oct. 12, 2013, robbery in which he pulled out a revolver and demanded a victim give him everything he had. When the victim ran away, Whiteside fired a single shot that struck the victim in the back and he demanded that the victim empty his pockets. When the man complied, Whiteside fled with the cash. The shooting paralyzed the man from the waist down. Whiteside pleaded guilty Jan. 29, 2014.

(Black) Killer avoids death penalty for Craigslist car deal shooting (of White man)
Tyrell Ronald Young Eric S. ErvinA Reading man avoided the possibility of being sentenced to death after he admitted Wednesday to the fatal shooting of an Allentown businessman during a Craigslist car deal. Tyrell Young pleaded guilty to third-degree murder, a person not to possess a firearm and receiving stolen property in connection with the April 2014 killing of 41-year-old Eric Ervin in East Allentown. The sentence came after a handful of Ervin's family members, most carrying photographs, tearfully described the gentle giant taken so suddenly from their lives. Richard Ervin has been counting the days since Eric, his first-born son, was killed -- 657 days as of Wednesday. When the elder Ervin woke up on Wednesday, he thanked God he wouldn't have to count anymore since Young would be pleading guilty. "Then I realized, I'll have to count till I'm gone," he sobbed. "I miss him so much. I don't know how to go on." Ervin's mother, Linda, wore a T-shirt from her son's business to court. She spoke through sobs as she described the earlier death of her daughter, Crystal, and then the stunning blow of Eric's murder. Linda Ervin said she was able to say good-bye to her daughter, but never had the chance with Eric. "Why didn't you let my son go?" Linda Ervin asked Young. "Why you had to do this, I don't understand. ... I hope you rot. ... You have devastated us. We're destroyed." - (Black-on-white)

(Black) Dante Taylor found guilty of the rape and murder of (White female 'acquaintance') Sarah Goode
Dante TaylorSarah P. GoodeDante Taylor was convicted Thursday of first-degree murder for raping and killing a young Medford mother two years ago, a verdict that left the victim’s large, extended family sobbing in relief in the Riverhead courtroom. The guilty verdict came after 14 1⁄2 hours of deliberations over three days, shortly after jurors reviewed photographs of the palm print Taylor left on the hood of Sarah Goode’s car. Prosecutors said the print was left in her blood, while the defense said her blood was deposited on the print. “It’s been a very, very long and difficult road for them to try and get justice for their sister,” Assistant District Attorney Janet Albertson said, as most of Goode’s eight siblings and other family clustered around her. “It won’t bring her back, but it will bring them a measure of peace.” Police focused on Taylor after realizing he was the last person to call her phone, and he did so while traveling toward where she was. Taylor raped and killed Goode after meeting her hours earlier at a street party. Taylor became enraged when Goode likely rejected his advances. - (Black-on-white)

Alexis, a store clerk at Dollar General, was getting cigars for a customer behind the register on Tuesday afternoon. "When I asked him for his ID, that's when he pulled his gun out,” she said. Alexis began to panic when she tried to open the register but was missing the key. "He came close to me, and he asked "Where's your purse, and do you have anything in your pockets?' He put his hand into my apron and took a box cutter out and my cell phone," she said. When the alleged suspect couldn't open the register, he became violent. Police said the suspect then pistol whipped Alexis. "Obviously, very violent in nature, as he hit the woman in a completely unprovoked-type situation," said MSgt. Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department. At that point, the suspect tried to force Alexis to find her manager. However, the store's alarm system began to sound, scaring the suspect. Alexis was able to run out of the back door to a nearby Whataburger for help. "After I was running to Whataburger, that's when I saw the blood all over my chest, and I didn't know it was that bad," Alexis said. Meanwhile, the thief robbed another woman at the front of the store, stealing her wallet from her purse. Before he was able to make his getaway, he robbed one more innocent bystander. "A citizen in the parking lot saw and began to follow him. This went into Warr Acres. When the suspect turned, he pointed the gun at him and robbed him of some jewelry he had on," Knight said. Police said the suspect fired his gun as he was hopping a nearby fence. The suspect is described as an 18- to 22-year-old black man. He was wearing a black hoodie and black sweat pants. He was also wearing black and red sneakers. "I just hope he gets caught for doing what he did," Alexis said. Alexis needed four staples, but it's not the physical wound that she is worrying about most. "Yesterday, I was in shock, and I was crying. I mean, I'm okay, kind of," she said. - (Black-on-white)

(Black) Serial rapist faces up to 100 years in prison after pleading no contest to 2 of 8 charges
Jaahlay LiwaruChristopher EnnisA serial rapist faces up to 100 years in prison after pleading no contest Monday to two of the eight charges against him. Christopher Ennis, 29, attacked as many as seven women over three years as the women walked alone in northeast Omaha, officials said. Ennis grabbed them from behind, dragged them behind bushes or buildings, choked them and raped them. Seven different women came forward saying that they had been raped after walking near the 27th and Maple Streets area. One of those women said Ennis also choked her to the point of unconsciousness — leading prosecutors to file a strangulation charge against him. Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said that a plea bargain was reached to spare the victims the trauma of reliving their attacks at trial. Kleine said five of Ennis’ victims have cooperated with prosecutors; a couple of others didn’t show up for depositions. One of the conditions of the plea deal, according to Kleine: that all of Ennis’ victims be allowed to write a letter to the judge explaining the impact the crime had on them. Ennis’ crime spree was vicious and the attacks grew more violent — leading police to worry that the attacker might kill. The man grabbed each woman as she walked alone — usually late at night or in the early morning hours. He then choked them, dragged them and raped them. The man sometimes apologized afterward, telling the women he was high on one kind of drug or another.
