  • Trial Begins in the 2013 Police Killing of Black Man Who Sought Help After Car Accident in North Carolina
White police officer Randall Kerrick shot 24-year-old Jonathan Ferrell. Kerrick has been charged with voluntary manslaughter and, if convicted, faces up to eleven years in prison. Kerrick had responded to a 911 call from a woman in a residential neighborhood in Charlotte, after Ferrell loudly knocked on her door. Ferrell had gotten into a car crash and was presumably looking for help, but the woman thought he was an intruder and called the police. Kerrick's lawyers are arguing that he was legitimately in fear for his life. They also contend that Ferrell had been high on marijuana and had taunted Kerrick to shoot him. Both sides, however, are in agreement that it was Ferrell who ran toward Kerrick but whether or not Kerrick had reason to use deadly force is up to debate.

Firefighter allegedly grilled over GoFundMe campaign for suspended colleague
Paul MannixThe FDNY firefighter who launched a campaign that raised $41,500 for a disciplined deputy chief wound up in hot water himself, sources told The Post. Firefighter Anthony Henry of Engine 10, on Liberty Street next to the World Trade Center, started a GoFundMe campaign on July 24 for Deputy Chief Paul Mannix to cover his loss of income from a 50-day unpaid suspension. Mannix, founder of Merit Matters, a firefighter group opposed to hiring quotas, was accused of leaking information about some minorities and women getting special treatment despite a lack of qualifications. He was often quoted in The Post and other news media. As donations poured in to cover $30,000 in lost wages for Mannix, a married dad, Henry was called into FDNY headquarters and grilled about the fund-raiser, sources said. Henry declined to comment. Some 660 people gave $41,588 in seven days, the GoFundMe site says. Mannix’s family will get a check for $35,000 with the rest going to a firefighter cause of his choice. Many donors posted comments in support of Mannix, who was forced by the FDNY to disband Merit Matters, and take down his blog. “Chief, thank you for being the voice of the members who believe in maintaining the high standards of this great department!” one wrote. Wrote another, “All you did was show that the job was about merit. Not about what race a person is.”

"The only thing he regrets is that he was caught." There is no statute of limitations. The assault began about 9 p.m. on March 15, 1983, as the couple were putting their 5-year-old son to bed. Demanding money and jewelry, he then followed the woman to the master bedroom, where he ordered her to pull down her pants. "Do you see this bullet? Timothy HurstConstance and Norman Fusilier hold the senior portrait of their daughter, Cindy HarrisonThe U.S. Supreme Court this fall will hear arguments in a challenge to the way Florida sentences people to death — a challenge backed by three former Florida Supreme Court justices and the American Bar Association. The case, which stems from the 1998 murder of a Nine Mile Road Escambia County fast-food worker, focuses on the role that juries play in recommending death sentences, which ultimately are imposed by judges. Timothy Hurst, now 36, was convicted in the 1998 murder of Cynthia Lee Harrison, who was an assistant manager at a Popeye’s Fried Chicken restaurant where Hurst worked. Harrison’s body was discovered bound in a freezer, and money was missing from a safe, according to a brief in the case. In sentencing Hurst to death, a judge found two aggravating circumstances — that the murder was committed during a robbery and that it was “especially heinous, atrocious or cruel,” according to the brief filed by Hurst’s attorneys. That brief, along with others in the case, were posted on an American Bar Association website and on SCOTUSblog, which closely tracks U.S. Supreme Court proceedings. - (Black-on-white)

  • Old wounds reopen for River Ridge parents as daughter's killer resentenced
Twelve years ago, Connie and Norman Fuselier of River Ridge sat in a courtroom in Pensacola and prayed that the man who stabbed their daughter more than 60 times would be found guilty of murder and receive the death sentence. After a weeklong trial that was one of the most painful experiences of their lives, that's exactly what happened. In 1998, Timothy Hurst, then 19 and an employee at the Popeye's restaurant in Pensacola where Cindy Harrison was the assistant manager, taped her hands and mouth before attacking her with a box cutter. He slit Harrison's throat, left her in the restaurant freezer, stole more than $1,000 and walked out. But more than a decade after the trial, Timothy Hurst remains on death row in Florida.

  • ‘Sanctuary cities’ defy immigration law
Kate Steinle, as a bridesmaid. Steinle was killed on July 1 in San Francisco, a “sanctuary city.”Juan Francisco Lopez-SanchezAs 32-year-old Kate Steinle enjoyed an evening walk with her dad on a busy San Francisco pier July 1, she was on a deadly collision course with the product of a dangerous policy the city had adopted to protect the man who was about to kill her. San Francisco is one of hundreds of communities nationwide, including a handful in Massachusetts, that designate themselves “sanctuary cities.” In an act of political hubris, local politicians instruct their police departments not to cooperate with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement requests to further detain illegal immigrants who are in local police custody. That’s why San Francisco officials never contacted federal immigration authorities when Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez a Mexican national who had been deported five times and had seven prior felony convictions — was released by prosecutors on a marijuana charge. He was free to walk the same pier, pick up a gun, and allegedly kill Steinle. - (Invasion!)

Deric MadisonJosh TubblevilleDeric Madison managed to avoid a capital murder conviction for the May 2014 slaying of a Dallas insurance salesman. But he will still serve a life sentence for killing 33-year-old Josh Tubbleville outside an Oak Lawn gas station, a Dallas County jury decided Monday. Madison, 25, was originally charged with capital murder because prosecutors said he robbed Tubbleville before shooting him. Instead, the same jury that would later sentence him decided that Madison — who had testifed during the trial that he was defending himself — was guilty of the lesser offense of murder. “When your time comes, and you’re going to die just like everybody else, you’re not going where I’m going,’” Caleb Tubbleville said. “Believe that.”Tubbleville’s mother had to spend two weeks in a mental hospital after his murder.“She feels you are very evil and a monster,” Tate said. - (Black-on-white)
