A constitutional challenge to Michigan's ban on college affirmative action, which comes before the U.S. Supreme Court this week, has given California defenders of race-based admissions a second chance to contest the 1996 ban adopted by the state's voters. The Michigan constitutional amendment was modeled on California's Proposition 209, and it forbids the state's universities to give "preferential treatment" to any applicant based on race. Rosenbaum and the American Civil Liberties Union sued in 1996 to block the California ban from taking effect, but the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the challenge, and the Supreme Court refused to hear the case.

Ethiopia's Red Terror takes center stage in Denver immigration trial
Kefelgn Alemu WorkuThe children of Habteab Berhe Temanu on Tuesday explained in a Denver courtroom the stark choice they faced when they recruited a man to act as their father in order to come to the United States. If they stayed in Nairobi, Kenya, where they were living illegally after fleeing Ethiopia, they could be deported to Eritrea, their father's original home, and pressed into military service and killed. They said they didn't know anything about the past of the man they recruited, Kefelgn Alemu Worku, who is now on trial on immigration-fraud charges. He is accused of being a notorious prison guard in Ethiopia who killed and brutalized inmates.

black terroristblack terroristDenis NaylorSACRAMENTO, CA - An 89-year-old man was beaten on the floor of his living room Monday during a violent home invasion robbery. It began when the doorbell rang at Denis Naylor's home in the 3500 block of Ridgewood Way in northeast Sacramento. "I can't remember his name, who he asked for. I said, 'no, you're at the wrong house,'" Naylor said. "Ten minutes later, I heard a bang. A terrible bang. I thought it was thunder." Naylor had just heard the sound of his rear sliding glass door being shot out by a .45-caliber pistol. Moments late,r the gunman was on him. "He says, 'I want your money, all the money. Now!' I said, 'Well, it's all in the bank, what I have. And he kept on kicking me and trying to make me give in kind of thing, you know. Which I didn't," Naylor said. As one individual held Naylor at gunpoint, the other ransacked his house. Naylor worried about his wife of 65 years, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease. "He was in the bedrooms emptying all the drawers, tipping them all out and seeing what I had," said Naylor, who by then was dripping blood and worried that his arm might be broken.     28 years in prison for corrupt ex-Detroit mayor
Kwame Kilpatrick Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was sentenced Thursday to 28 years in prison for corruption, after a series of scandals destroyed his political career and helped steer a crisis-laden city even deeper into trouble. Kilpatrick, who served as mayor from 2002 until fall 2008, fattened his bank account by tens of thousands of dollars, traveled the country in private planes and even strong-armed his campaign fundraiser for stacks of cash hidden in her bra, according to evidence at trial. "I'm ready to go so the city can move on," Kilpatrick told the judge. "The people here are suffering, they're hurting. A great deal of that hurt I accept responsibility for." In March, Kilpatrick, 43, was convicted of racketeering conspiracy, fraud, extortion and tax crimes. The government called it the "Kilpatrick enterprise," a years-long scheme to shake down contractors and reward allies. He was doomed by his own text messages, which revealed efforts to fix deals for a pal, Bobby Ferguson, an excavator who got millions of dollars in city work through the water department.

  • 2 rabbis, 2 others charged in Jewish divorce shakedown
In a bizarre case involving threats of kidnapping, beatings and physical torture — including the use of an electric cattle prod— two rabbis were charged in New Jersey on Wednesday in a scheme to force men to grant their wives religious divorces. Two others were also charged in the case, which grew out of an undercover sting operation involving a female FBI agent who posed as a member of the Orthodox community seeking a divorce. As many as six others may also be charged, officials said. Sources say the investigation was sparked by a similar case in 2011, when David Wax, a 49-year-old rabbi and Talmudic scholar from Lakewood, and his wife, Judy, were charged with kidnapping and severely beating an Israeli man who had refused to give his wife a divorce. That case has been repeatedly adjourned for months—a sign of possible cooperation. Initially charged were Rabbis Mendel Epstein, 68, and Martin Wolmark, 55, Ariel Potash, 40, and a fourth individual only identified as “Yaakov.” All four are due to appear in U.S. District Court in Trenton later today.

Deputies received a call to check on the welfare of Jacqueline Bell Saturday morning. Deputies said she was found dead in her home on Northwest Lee Street from "homicidal violence." Investigators believe the crime occurred earlier that morning. At 8:05 that same morning, an OSP trooper was notified about a reckless driver on Interstate 84 heading east near Milepost 251. A commercial truck driver reported a green car driving between the travel lanes and nearly rear-ending his trailer. The right front passenger, later identified as Micus Ward, 19, of Kansas City, tried to run, but was caught by another trooper a short time later. The driver was unable to get out of the car and was taken into custody. He was identified as Jodah Cain, 17, the great-grandson of Bell. Investigators said he had been living with her in Cedar Mill.     7 blacks arrested for two-week Detroit killing spree - White Vietnam War vet murdered - shot in back
7 black feral hood rat killersJohn VillneffDETROIT - Seven men are arrested in connection with what police say is a two-week killing spree in Detroit. Police believe the spree started with the murder of two teenage boys from Westland. The bodies of 18-year-old Jake Kudla and 17-year-old Jourdan Bobbish were found in a field on Detroit's east side late July of 2012. They had been missing for about a week. The boys' families eventually learned they visited an uncle's house, then went to a gas station looking to buy drugs. Investigators say they met with a group of guys who drove them to a house, robbed them, drove them to a field on Lyford Street and shot them to death.
"Yes, these are some god-awful people that need to be off the street," Melissa Villneff said. Police believe the suspects also killed her father, 62-year-old John Villneff. Police say on that day the group broke in and robbed a house, pistol whipped a 16-year-old boy and shot and killed John Villneff, a veteran and two-time Purple Heart recipient. But the alleged killing spree continues. Just hours later, in the early-morning hours of August 9, police believe some of the men are involved in a carjacking and used a woman to lure a 25-year-old man into an apartment building, robbing and killing him. The first suspect was arrested in connection with John Villneff's murder and the rest slowly started to trickle in after that as, police say, the men began to turn on each other. The suspects have been locked up for months, and some are already convicted for Villneff's murder. The men arrested in connection with the killing spree are Felando Hunter, Fredrick Young, brothers Reco and Aquire Simmons, Michael Evans, Michael Montgomery and Brandon Crawford. - (Black-on-white)
