A man charged with the 1994 sexual assault and death of his then-girlfriend Pennie Griffin's 5-year-old daughter Felicia Griffin will become Hinds County's first death penalty case in nearly 10 years.
Peterson said black jurors will vote for the death penalty if the circumstances warrant it, especially if a child is involved. Felicia died at the home her mother shared with Moffett on Lynda Street. Moffett reported to police he found Felicia on the bed bleeding after he came home from a bar. The child's mother, Pennie Griffin, couldn't be reached for comment. Felicia told an uncle in the summer of 1994 that she had been touched between her legs by Moffett, but Griffin didn't file charges. - (Tyrone N. Butts) - (TNB) - (crime)

Canada: Gay Cuban migrant Mendez-Romero held in his gay bar owner lover's death - "Long-time companion"
The long-time companion of the owner of Toronto's oldest gay bar was yesterday charged with first-degree murder in his asphyxiation death almost a year ago.  Ivan Mendez-Romero, 36, had lived with Janko Naglic, 58, for about "eight or nine years" in a large home on leafy Balliol Street until Mr. Naglic was found dead in the residence in October, 2004.  Reports at the time said Mr. Mendez-Romero was still living with Mr. Naglic when the latter was killed, and that he placed a 911 call to police to report his death, but police yesterday would provide no information on whether any of that was true, saying they don't want to compromise the legal proceedings. Mr. Mendez-Romero came to Canada from Cuba about ten years ago. - (Mogly) - (CanadaPolice thank queer community for help

  • "Rev. Fred Phelps: God Punishing GIs Over Gays"
SMYRNA, Tenn. -- Members of a Fred's church say God is punishing American soldiers for defending a country that harbors gays, and they brought their anti-gay message to the funerals Saturday of two Tennessee soldiers killed in Iraq. The Rev. Fred Phelps, founder of Westboro Baptist in Kansas, contends that American soldiers are being killed in Iraq as vengeance from God for protecting a country that harbors gays.  - Editor note: I don't get it, is Fred talking about Iraq or the U.S.A?  I mean, the U.S. soldiers are not defending the U.S. in Iraq - but I didn't know that Iraq 'harbors gays' - (although the U.S. and the U.K. does).     Catholic Church & Charities Illegally 'Aid and Abet' Aliens? - By Daneen G. Peterson, Ph.D. - (Invasion!) - (Commentary)

by H. Millard © 2005
Native HawaiiansWhat is the most essential and basic glue that binds living, and formerly living, and yet to be living individuals to other individuals whether they are animal or plant? Is it a piece of paper such as a constitution? Is it nebulous concepts such as "freedom" and "democracy"? Is it that they have occupied the same piece of land? No. Not one of these things is essential or basic. And none of them are very strong glue. What naturally glues together things that live or have lived or will live is having the same genome. In humans, this is usually expressed as being of the same race. - (Commentary) - (H. Millard index) - (Abo)
