Southeast Slayings Suspect Caught in La.  MONROE, La. -- A man wanted in Georgia and South Carolina in connection with two killings, a rape and an armed robbery was captured after crashing his stolen car during a police chase, authorities said. Tobias Chano "Toby" Lee, 28, had just gotten off Interstate 20 Tuesday afternoon after a Louisiana state trooper signaled him to pull over for following another vehicle too closely, police said. As the trooper approached the car, Lee sped away, leading to a chase at speeds as high as 90 mph, said Trooper Julie Lewis. Mother can't understand why black robber beat and cracked skull of her 97-lb daughter  CLEVELAND -- The mother of a 27-year-old Medina woman beaten during a robbery can't understand why the suspect did it. "She's 97 pounds, five feet tall and he's over six feet, 210 pounds," said Betty Townsend. "And he could have scared her just by looking at her. That's what's so awful to me. Why did he have to hit her so hard?" Her daughter, Missy Townsend, is one of two women from Medina County recovering from head injuries after they were beaten during robberies on the same night, possibly victims of the same man. Townsend's skull was badly fractured last week by a man who attacked her outside the Medina apartment she shares with her mother. The attacker took her purse and cell phone. Interracial Couple Accused Of Scamming Churches Over the weekend, police in Maury County arrested a couple accused of scamming several area churches.
Police say they targeted churches with bogus sob stories and made off with hundreds of dollars in cash and services. The suspects, Patricia Jenkins and Jim Wells, were charged with fraud. The couple was accused of telling several Columbia churches that they needed money to visit a sick relative out of state. - (Tyrone N. Butts) |

Vimbai Chakudunga, 28, told passers-by his fatally injured wife Claire, 30, had been driving, it was alleged. He failed a breath test and refused a blood test claiming he had not been driving.
