Grenade attack statement ruled admissible A sergeant's admission that he rolled grenades into the tents of sleeping soldiers in Kuwait last year will be admissible when he goes on trial in the attack, a judge ruled at a pretrial hearing for Sgt. Hassan Akbar. The judge also granted Akbar's lawyers a delay in his trial so they could gather more documentation for an insanity defense. Two officers were killed and 14 soldiers wounded in the grenade attack in the early days of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. |
Court Blocks Death for Man Who Killed 13  A day before he was scheduled to die, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court on Wednesday blocked the execution of a man convicted of killing 13 (mostly white) people in a shooting rampage in 1982. The justices sent the case back to the trial court for a hearing on whether 62-year-old George E. Banks is mentally competent. Banks was convicted of killing five of his children, four current or former girlfriends and four others in Wilkes-Barre. The former prison guard said he wanted to protect his children from the "abuse he suffered as a biracial child". - (Smilin' Jack)Ref: George Emil Banks - "A twisted mind snaps" Living in a predominately white neighborhood and being involved in a series of interracial relationships brought its own share of problems to Banks’ home. Banks claimed that his white neighbors “intimidated the women and called the children African niggers.” His home was once firebombed. |
Texas Governor Blocks Execution of Black Woman Frances Newton, 39, was convicted in the 1987 shooting deaths of her husband and two children, ages 20 months and 7. Prosecutors said Newtown killed her family to collect $100,000 in insurance benefits. - (forum) |
| Hispanic Stranger Grabs, Kisses 16-year-old Oregon Girl Walking To School BEAVERTON, Ore. -- A 16-year-old girl says a man grabbed and kissed her as she walked to school. The Beaverton High School student told police that she walking about 6:45 a.m. when she spotted a man sitting in a dark-blue, four-door, mid-sized sedan. She kept walking but heard the man approaching from behind. He made several comments and then tried to kiss her. The teen pushed him away, but he put both hands on her face and forcibly kissed her. She fought him off, and he ran back to his car. She went to the high school and called police. The suspect is an Hispanic man about 18 years old, 5'6"-5'7" with a thin build. FBI officials issued subpoenas to four senior officials at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee    The subpoenas appeared to be part of an ongoing probe into whether two other staff members at the lobby may have passed secrets to Israel. The four subpoenaed officials are Executive Director Howard Kohr, Managing Director Richard Fishman, Communications Director Renee Rothstein, and Research Director Rafi Danziger. Suspended Roman Catholic priest pleads guilty in rape of altar boy A 63-year-old sodomite and suspended Roman Catholic priest may spend the rest of his life in prison after pleading guilty to four counts of raping an altar boy in the 1980s. Robert V. Gale changed his plea to guilty on Tuesday after maintaining his innocence since 2002, when he was charged with felony child rape for repeatedly sexually assaulting a child in the rectory of his parish, St. Jude’s in Waltham, Mass. The Ohio Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned a man's death sentence and murder conviction in the execution-style shootings of two White college students, Brian Muha and Aaron Land, saying the case should have been tried in Pennsylvania where they were killed. The court ruled unanimously that Terrell Yarbrough was wrongly tried in Ohio for aggravated murder of the students from Franciscan University in Steubenville.
Chai Vang was charged with six counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder. Wisconsin does
not have a death penalty. The criminal complaint said the hunters managed to shoot back once or twice after the Nov. 21 confrontation with the Hmong immigrant about trespassing on private land. Two survivors told investigators that no one in their group pointed a gun at Vang before he opened fire, according to the complaint. Four victims were shot in the back.
