He had plans to save up for a house to share with his 2-year-old daughter and was excited for their future. But it was all cut short early Sunday morning when Garrick was hit while driving home from his first day on the job. And authorities say the woman who hit him shouldn't have been on the roads. Orange County deputies first spotted 27-year-old Syndia Saint Cyr about 1:30 a.m. speeding. A deputy working a traffic enforcement in the area said Saint Cyr was traveling at least 20 mph over the speed limit, so he activated his emergency lights and attempted to stop her. Saint Cyr — who authorities said is a habitual traffic offender and has a revoked license — kept driving. Saint Cyr continued at what the deputy "estimated to be 100 mph."     2 (blacks) now charged in shooting of (White) lottery winner
Andrel PageJames WattsPatricia Manning - mother of victimWhite shooting victim (staples)LOUISVILLE, KY - Two men have been arrested in connection with the shooting of another man moments after he won $1,000 on a lottery scratch-off ticket. Investigators said they were booking one suspect into Metro Corrections, and then hours later, a second person was arrested in the Feb. 7 shooting that took place near Churchill Downs. Arrest reports for Andrel Page, 21, and James Watts, 40, state that both suspects admitted to being involved in the shooting. Page is charged with robbery and assault. Watts is charged with facilitation of robbery. "The lottery is a very big business here," Patricia Manning of the store where her 19-year-old son bought his ticket. Any day of the week, any time, you'll find someone at the Marathon Station on Taylor Boulevard buying a lottery ticket. And just a few weeks ago, Manning's son turned a $5 scratch-off into a $1,000 winner. "He called me on the phone," Manning said. "He said, 'Mom, I just won $1,000 on a lottery ticket.'" Added store owner Mehr Dad: "He was so excited to get $1,000. It was big money for him." In a matter of minutes, however, pure joy turned into anguish, and a mother heard it all play out on the phone. "The next thing I heard was some yelling and then a loud noise which I know now was a gunshot," Manning said. "He shot my son in a flat second." Dad said he's certain a man inside heard the young man celebrating the win. "I believe that someone was standing over here and I believe his partner was sitting outside in the car and when (the victim) left, I believe they followed him out," he said. The shooting took place steps away from the store on Longfield Avenue. "The guy was asking him for his lottery ticket, and when he turned around, the guy had a gun and shot him," Manning said. "So my son took the ticket out of his pocket and threw it on the ground and said, 'You didn't have to shoot me, dude.'" As for Manning’s son, his recovery continues. "We got the staples out (Tuesday), so maybe he can stand up straighter," she said. Manning said she's thankful her son feels better and thankful to the lottery as well. She said the agency helped police and honored her son's winning ticket because it was scanned and signed. "The lottery went above and beyond," she said. Manning said she's also thankful to a neighbor who rushed out with a towel to stop the bleeding, and a man who also saw the commotion and pulled over to help her son. - (Black-on-white)

Execution date set for black throat-slitting killer of disabled White woman in 2004 - despite Ohio not having lethal drugs
James FrazierMary StevensonCOLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Supreme Court has set an execution date for a condemned killer over the objection of two justices who question establishing dates when the state doesn't have any lethal drugs. The court ruled 5-2 on Friday to schedule James Frazier's execution for Oct. 17, 2019. He is set to die for the 2004 slaying of a woman in a Toledo apartment building where both lived. The decision means Ohio now has 25 death row inmates with firm execution dates beginning early next year at a time when the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction still can't find drugs to put them to death with. Justice Paul Pfeifer (PEYE'-fuhr) says in a dissenting opinion that it serves "no rational purpose" to continue to set execution dates without drugs on hand. This story has been corrected to show Ohio has 25 inmates with firm execution dates, not 26. - (Black-on-white)

I’m rubbing her hair and I’m trying to talk to her and let her know that I was here. And I was like, ‘Can you hear me?’ And I felt her head nod a little bit. And she took a deep breath, and she just stopped breathing.” Babick, 24, left behind two children. Her funeral is scheduled for Feb. 21. Gaines and Babick had known each other for years and had been dating since November. - (Black-on-white)

Shatrara Lehman (l.) and Alexander RobinsonCOOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A 64-year-old West Ridge man was brutally beaten to death with a frying pan at a birthday party, prosecutors said Wednesday. Tommy McGrewKatherine "Katie" SnodgrassAUSTIN – Police have charged a man with striking a woman with his car in northwest Austin on Jan. 6 and leaving the scene. Tommy McGrew, 29, was charged Tuesday with felony failure to stop and render aid. He allegedly struck Katherine Snodgrass the evening of Jan. 6 near the intersection of Lakeline Mall Drive and North Lake Creek Parkway. Janice Terrell West, 35-year-old mother of two, had been raped, sodomized and murdered in her Cottonvale Road home in what veteran prosecutor Greg McConnell calls “one of the most gruesome, horrible murders that has ever occurred in Chatham County.” “It was a death penalty case,” he said.     (Black) Couple accused of leaving body in bag on apartment patio is arrested
Will Richardson and Ashley WilliamsJenna K. FergusondumpsterSEATAC, Wash. — Will Richardson and Ashley Williams did the right thing and surrendered Monday night to Seattle Police at the Southwest Precinct and were booked into the King County jail for Unlawful Disposal of Human remains where they are being held on $50,000 bail. King County Detectives say they put Jenna Ferguson’s body in a large purple duffle bag after she overdosed on Heroin and then took her remains with them when they got thrown out of a Motel 6 last summer. Surveillance cameras caught them loading up the duffle bag in the back of a taxi. Ferguson’s remains were found two weeks later on July 27, 2015 next to a dumpster in a SeaTac apartment complex. Court documents show the couple brought the bag containing Ferguson's body to an apartment of a friend in SeaTac and kept it on the patio. When the friend complained about the smell, detectives say Ashley told her friend to "stay out of it and that it contained food they brought from the hotel room." Court documents say the friend asked Richardson to leave the apartment after he sent her Facebook messages that were sexual in nature. Afterwards, she took the duffel bag and his belongings and put them next to a dumpster a few yards from her apartment. The body was found by a maintenance man. - (Black-on-white)

(Adulterous white) Wife in deadly Mission Bend love triangle charged with murder (of her White husband)
Jessica Leal and black boyfriend Avery JonesChevey LealHOUSTON -- The morning of January 13 began like so many others for Mary Lou Nimmons. She sent her younger brother, Chevey Leal, a text. "I texted him at 9:30 just to say good morning, and little did I know this was happening," said Nimmons, her voice trailing off softly. What Nimmons didn't know was that morning, Leal had driven to his Misson Bend-area home to get some personal items. According to investigators, Leal got in an argument with his estranged wife Jessica outside their house. Investigators say Jessica Leal's (black) boyfriend, Avery Jones, was inside the home. Court records show Jessica Leal allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife to threaten her husband. At one point, investigators believe Leal held her husband down on the ground with the knife. They say that's when Leal's (black) boyfriend Avery Jones allegedly shot and killed Chevey Leal. "He left a very big hole in our lives," said Nimmons, who just buried her brother last weekend. "Not only for my family but for his children." While the boyfriend, Jones, was an immediate suspect, Jessica Leal was only questioned on January 13. Court records show Jones was charged murder two days later, but Leal remained free. She publically mourned her husband's death, even attended his funeral last weekend. This Wednesday, Leal was arrested and charged with her husband's murder. Nimmons says she knew her sister-in-law may have been involved with another man. Now, with her brother gone and six children without a dad, she just hopes the justice system works. - (Black-on-white)

Black killer of White Lexington police officer to appear before parole board next week
Glenn Rahan DoneghyBryan DurmanGlenn Doneghy goes before the Kentucky Parole Board on Monday, and Fayette County Commonwealth’s Attorney Ray Larson said his office will have representatives there to oppose his release. Doneghy, 39, is serving a 20-year sentence for second-degree manslaughter and other charges in the 2010 death of Lexington police officer Bryan Durman. Durman’s wife, Brandy Durman, started a petition on Change.org a month ago. Larson shared the petition on his Facebook page Tuesday, saying “We will attend that parole board hearing to oppose his release. You can participate by signing the following petition which indicates YOUR opposition to the parole of this killer.” Durman, 27, died soon after being hit by Doneghy’s sport utility vehicle while investigating a noise complaint on North Limestone Street on April 29, 2010. Doneghy was convicted of second-degree manslaughter, as well as second-degree assault, leaving the scene of an accident, possession of cocaine, fourth-degree assault, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
